NATO Urges Action on Commitments Ahead of Ankara Summit
According to reports, Shekerinska made the remarks during the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Spring Session held in Lithuania, stressing that allied leaders would gather in Ankara in a matter of weeks with a clear expectation to move from promises to practical implementation.
“In just six weeks' time, allied heads of state and government will meet in Ankara. The secretary general of NATO has a clear message for the NATO summit; we have to turn commitments into action now,” Shekerinska said.
She warned that the threat posed by Russia to the alliance would persist even after the end of the war, underscoring that NATO must remain constantly prepared and vigilant.
“In a more dangerous and volatile world, we must invest in our security, and we have to ramp up our defenses, all of us. And we have to do it together,” Shekerinska underscored.
According to reports, Shekerinska recalled that NATO members had previously agreed to allocate 5% of GDP to defense by 2035, noting that the upcoming Ankara summit will focus on transforming financial commitments into operational military capabilities.
"It's a bit like the Olympic motto: it has to be faster, it has to be higher, it has to be stronger, and we have to do it together," she further said.
She also highlighted the importance of distributing defense responsibilities more evenly among member states, calling for a more balanced sharing of burdens within the alliance.
