Lithuanian President Rejects Renewed Calls for Engagement with Russia

(MENAFN) Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said on Monday that renewed proposals to engage with Russia do not align with Europe’s current security requirements.

According to reports, Nausėda made the remarks during the NATO Parliamentary Assembly’s spring session held in the Lithuanian parliament, stressing that the future of European security is being shaped by the war in Ukraine and warning against attempts to normalize relations with Moscow.

He argued that Russia should be contained rather than approached diplomatically without conditions, emphasizing that ongoing discussions in Europe over potential dialogue with Russia risk undermining security priorities.

“At this point, there is also no escaping the fact that the future of European security is being decided in Ukraine. But first, Russia must be stopped. It has to be contained, not courted. Renewed calls for engagement with Moscow do not reflect Europe’s security needs,” he said.

According to reports, his comments come amid broader debate within Europe regarding possible future contacts with Russia, as diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine remain stalled.

EU foreign ministers have recently discussed frameworks for any potential negotiations with Moscow, agreeing that future engagement should be coordinated through EU institutions.

According to reports, the debate has also been influenced by discussions around possible intermediaries in future talks, including proposals that have been dismissed by European officials.

Nausėda reiterated that any approach toward Russia must be grounded in deterrence and strict conditions rather than efforts aimed at restoring normal relations.
