Survey Finds Majority of Europeans See Their Countries as Threatened
The Flash Eurobarometer 574, conducted by Brussels-based polling firm Demoscopy at the request of the European Commission, gathered responses ahead of the Munich Security Conference.
The survey revealed that threat perception is highest in France at 80%, followed by the Netherlands and Denmark at 77%, and Germany at 75%.
Regarding defense spending, 32% of participants feel that the European Union has not done enough to enhance security, while 34% believe their own countries have fallen short in this area.
Despite these concerns, a majority of Europeans—52%—express confidence in the EU’s ability to strengthen security and defense. Confidence levels were highest in Luxembourg (76%), Portugal (74%), and Lithuania (71%). However, in the EU’s three largest members—Italy, Germany, and France—trust was lower, with 47% of Germans and Italians and 40% of French respondents expressing skepticism.
The survey also found broad support for EU defense investments, with nearly three-quarters of participants backing current spending or advocating for increased investment. Support was strongest in Portugal (89%), followed by Finland (83%), Lithuania and Spain (80%), and Denmark (78%).
The Flash Eurobarometer 574 was conducted online between Jan. 5 and Jan. 12, polling approximately 27,000 participants across the EU’s 27 member states.
